About half the time I've been through SYD someone approaches me in the baggage hall, asks me about my stuff, and directs me to bypass the baggage screening entirely.

From my very limited observation, if you are white, look business-like, are traveling alone, and arrive when there are some lineups, it is commonplace to not have your bags screened.
