I personally think that's a strech to even ask for, since technically your companion should have had to pay full fare for the final leg since you weren't travelling with them.
Has anyone here actually successfully done this? I think it's a major risk to assume the gate agent wouldn't have time to check. Maybe a great big red warning message and buzzers go off if they try and close the flight out, then they go pull the companion off the flight.
