It's not inconceivable that it would have both GSM and CDMA. Vodafone in the UK is part owner of Verizon and uses GSM. And there are already several phones on Verizon which automatically switch to GSM when in a foreign country.
Is having GSM and CDMA the only criterion for use both in Europe and on the Verizon network? I vaguely remember reading about some other difference between US and European networks.
