MHO would still feel you're safer in Cuba than elsewhere you've pottered about alone in Western Europe, Istanbul, Bombay, Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Japan and North America. Having been to almost all on this list and Cuba twice that is of course just MHO.

Heck, my guidebook warned me about the park surrounding the Cloisters in Manhattan and I went anyway and didn't feel unsafe at all and am so glad I didn't let it scare me off as I very much enjoyed that half day visit to this special NYC sight.
