kevinsac: If you do not want to travel you can get a refund, or a partial refund if you have already used part of your ticket - contact the issuing carrier or your travel agency to do that.
UPDATED: Sorry, I skimmed over the part where UA won't let you change until flight is canceled; now I understand your hope.
