I use American only, but here's how it works: You use your SPG Amex whenever possible and receive 1 SPG point for each dollar spent. When you reach 20,000 points, you can transfer the points to your AAdvantage account and receive a bonus of 5,000 miles, for a total of 25,000 miles. If you'd used your Citibank AAdvantage MasterCard, you would have received 1 mile for every dollar spent (unless, of course, there's some special promotion.
