Randy's Journal (Boeing) that briefly discussed seating configuration and explains pretty concisely the rational some have for switching to 3-3-3. It was an interview with an interior designer at Boeing who stated:
I would say this is true for most people in Y. No one is expecting the bells and whistles back there, but any additional space is always a bonus. I've always preferred 3-3-3 myself.
