MetroCards have been this way since as far back as I can remember. I don't know the reasoning why, but the 4 pax limit per swipe cycle has been around on all cash-value cards (versus unlimited), not just the AirTrain ones.
I've had agents reset my card when traveling with family so I could get the 5th person in but it isn't worth the time IMO, especially a JFK where they are often understaffed and not inclined to be extra helpful. Not saying it cannot be done, but I wouldn't bet on it and I'd budget 5-10 minutes to make it happen. Or just pay for the one extra $10 card and still come out way ahead of the game.
