Upgrades are 5000 PTS per night per upgrade regardless of the point category of the property. Depending on the type of accomodation and property you may need anywhere from 1 to 4 upgrades per night on top of the base award. So the question to ask is how many upgrades per night are required. Using your Cat 6 MVCI property as an example, it is 30000 points/night for the cat 6 award. It will be at least an additional 5000 points/night for the upgrade to a 1 bedroom (could be more, you need to look at the T'&C's in the award to see how many upgrades per night are required). So you're looking at a minumum of 35,000 points/night. Sometimes they also offer award plus cash upgrades. Depending on whether you have more cash or more points they may be attractive to you. For me, I have always had more points than cash so far and have upgraded with points.
