Living in Norway with a UK based Centurion card, I've never encountered this problem. Wherever I am in the world I call "Uk Direct", ask them to place a collect call through to the UK, and upon connecting to the voice prompting system everything works out fine.
Last time I was in th US, their localCenturion service was more than happy to help me out on several US matters including concerts and restaurant reservations.
