I thought, but I'm probably mistaken, that I was able to do this much earlier (like T-7 or 10 days) on a recent flight to MAD.

Hasn't changed, except the prized 2 seats A & C behind the curtain have gone back to being just 2 seats after a brief period as standard 3 ET seats.
