I just stayed at the Embassy Suites at LAX South and it was in a nice location. We only had a short drive to the beach. If you need to rent a car there is an enterprise rental car desk in their lobby, and there is a shuttle service from the hotel that will pick you up at the airport. Good restaurants are in Manhattan Beach area.
