I only watched this again last weekend and it's a recurring theme in Scorcese movies - it's the greed that catches people, as much as anything else.
Actually, IIRC, the scene in Casino involved hole card identification not card-counting.

Yes, it's often the greed on a number of levels including playing too long and not putting in enough proper cover play moves (both in BJ, and playing other non-advantage games).

Ken Uston got beat up pretty badly in Tahoe, though, he was able to evade security with his disguises for quite some time. Though, his optimal years were in the early 70's, and security was not as sophisticated. But, in the early 70's the backroom was a bit more painful.
