Sometimes they are in never never land.
Even as a gold or diamond the upgrades get you the best available room, not suites. Well at least not the penthouse type of suites, I've gotten the junior exec suites which is just a bigger room. And no you can't purchase upgrades with points but dollars are gratefully accepted.
