I check boxes all the time, you will have to sign a waiver and I can almost guarantee that one or more of them will be opened and searched by TSA. If the boxes are stuffed full and TSA can not repack them properly, they will smash everything back in the box and cover the box with tape. It's a hassle but all of my boxes have arrived more or less intact.
