Most of the UK policies I've looked at only cover additional costs to reach your final destination if you suffer transport failure on your way to the airport which causes you to miss your original flight.

They don't normally cover the costs of booking a new flight (with another airline for example) if your current flight is cancelled as this is considered the airlines liability.

They do all cover you for losses due to having to cancel your trip after a longish delay though.
I have always understood things this same way. But, that is why I posted the question - because if you fly on some LCCs like Ryanair, they are not going to get you to your destination sometimes. Thus, it would be nice to have some insurance as a backup.
