I booked an award for someone else (long story) for travel within Asia. He had to cancel... I called, cancelled the flights, and they told me about the $150 fee to re-deposit. For the 20 or 30k miles (I don't remember how many it was), I didn't think it was worth it, heck I get so many miles with promos... Anyway, I asked what happened if I didn't re-deposit. You can keep the same PNR, and within a year call back and use the same number of miles for another award. You still need to pay all the taxes/fees, but there's no redeposit fee (I'm just Gold so I'd have to pay it otherwise). The key here is the same number of miles; if it is different, you'll have to pay that fee to redeposit, or just use 'different' miles.

Just something you may want to consider.
