If it is for operational reasons, they have to put you on another airline, not necessarily BA. There are seats on VS from LHR to JFK in the afternoon and if they don't mind going into EWR, there are seats on EK from LHR in the morning and CO also in the morning.
Just don't take no for an answer. It is ridiculous to cancel a flight and expect everyone to leave a day earlier or a day later.
