An enhanced/preferred room upgrade is the same type of room that you book originally, only it may include rooms on higher floors, corner rooms, newly renovated rooms, or rooms with preferred views.
Also, if you book a smoking preference room, I would expect to get a smoking preference room at check-in.
Basically, my advice is this: Book whatever room type you feel would best suit your needs and let the enhanced/preferred part of the benefits work to your advantage from there.
