FWIW, AA seems to upgrade according to status. Early checkin doesn't seem to matter - the upgrade seems to be done shortly before boarding starts (hope your BP gets rejected by the BP reader - that's a good sign).

BA is said to be random. Some say you're more likely to get opup with no status at all than top status with BA.
