As mentioned above, this question is best suited (and likely to get the best answer even) over in the

In the meantime, I'd suggest hanging onto your Membership Rewards points until you actually need them in a specific account -- they're more valuable where they are, with flexibility -- or until you are ready to cancel the Amex with Membership Rewards. Definitely move your points out before cancelling so you don't forfeit them.
There's a current offer, by the way,
for 5000 bonus Delta points for transferring 20,000 Membership Rewards points.
The larger point is you might wait to make the transfer until there's an attractive bonus. There are transfer bonuses quite frequently ... seems at least once a year there's a bonus for Delta and Continental transfers. I know I saw a 1/3 transfer bonus to Starwood last year as well.
