Weather in NZ will be nothing like Cairns. Queenstown on the south island is at a higher latitude than New York is.
As for the currency, my own speculation is unless you are planning on spending large amounts I would not be particularly worried about it's movements. It's post float average is around 70 US cents it was overvalued it has corrected. The $NZ just follows whatever the AUD does.
