Zodiac Aerospace Wants to Put Urinals in Planes

Zodiac Airspace, a finalist at this year’s Crystal Cabin Awards, wants to streamline the bathroom experience for airline passengers by introducing the Durinal, a plan that would see one aircraft lavatory per flight replaced with two urinals.

“The innovation will benefit female passengers too, at least indirectly: when the men have their own urinal facility, the queue for the rest of the cabin will be reduced,” read a press release.

It remains unclear how aircraft lavatories would be kept from becoming a crime scene of stale pee due to the fact that those who use men’s restrooms are seemingly unable to reliably direct all or even most of their urine-streams into stationary units on terra firma, never mind wildly jostling aircraft.

I love the urinals on LH A380. If I get up in the middle of the night and need to pee, especially if there is some bumpy air, I don’t want to have to aim and wake up enough to stand in front of the toilet. With the urinal, you just flop it out and take care of business, then stagger back to your bed and sleep some more.

Why not just hand out urinary catheters and bags prior to boarding? That way less passengers would need to use the lavatory.

Are they talking about two urinals in one bathroom, or two separate rooms? Two urinals in one tiny room sounds way too cozy for me, but I don't see how they could have space for two separate rooms in the same footprint.

Dumb idea since a lavatory with a urinal and sink would take up amost the same amount of space and a lavatory with a toilet and sink, but would have less utility. It would also cost and weight about the same too.
