WestJet Returns to Gander After 10 Years, Adds Houston as Part of Ambitious Summer 2015 Schedule

WestJet to add nine new routes and increase frequency on 15 more in a ramp up for Summer 2015.

According to CBC News, WestJet Airlines will resume operations at Gander International Airport (YQY) in the summer of 2015 after having pulled out of the airport in April 2005. The announcement was made as part of the rollout of the airline’s summer schedule, which includes nine new routes and increased frequency on 15 established routes. Most of the route expansion will occur in Atlantic Canada.

A new seasonal service between Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and YQY is set to begin on May 3. The airline will also add daily non-stop service between Calgary International Airport (YYC) and George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), as well as between YYC and Northwest Regional Airport (YXT). All three locations are significant centers in the oil and gas industries, and the airline state in a press release that the new routes will help it grow and improve services for business travelers.

The carrier plans to expand its international operations with resumption of its daily service between St. John’s International Airport (YYT) and Dublin Airport (DUB) and the introduction of a new daily service between Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) and Glasgow Airport (GLA).

YHZ will also see an increase in domestic traffic. WestJet, in conjunction with its regional WestJet Encore, will introduce new routes from YHZ to YQY, Deer Lake Regional Airport (YDF) and Sydney Airport (YQY). This will give WestJet Encore, which began operations in 2013, a national presence in the Canadian airline industry. The regional carrier will also introduce new services between Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW) and Greater Moncton International Airport (YQM), and YYZ to Fredericton International Airport (YFC).

The press release also indicates that additional services in Western Canada include Edmonton International Airport (YEG) to Kamloops Airport (YKA), operated by WestJet Encore starting on February 15, and YYC to Yellowknife Airport (YZF), operated by WestJet starting on May 3.
