Watch This Passenger Plane Make a Terrifying Landing in High Winds

Pilot saves flight during treacherous landing in strong crosswinds at Birmingham Airport in the West Midlands, United Kingdom.

Passengers on a Flybe flight from Dusseldorf, Germany to the U.K. recently had an unexpected scary ride when the plane landed in heavy crosswinds. Video footage taken from outside the aircraft shows the plane landing almost sideways, then zigzagging down the runway as the pilot mitigates the strong winds.

“On landing, the steering was temporarily affected by a strong cross wind gust from the right, as seen by the crabbing action and sharp veer to the right of the aircraft,” a Flybe spokesperson said, the Daily Mail reported. “The crew quickly managed this accordingly.”

Landings like this are apparently not all that uncommon, and the airline said customers on future flights can rest assured that this type of problem will always be expertly handled.

“The safety of our passengers and crew are our obvious number one priority,” said Caption Chris Coney-Jones, the fleet general manager at Flybe. “Taking off and landing in strong and gusty winds is all in a day’s work. Our pilots are highly trained and have the necessary skills, training and procedures required to assess and make the required operational decisions to conduct a safe flight in such adverse weather conditions.”

The pilot initially reported the issue was due to a steering fault, but when he regained control later, it showed the wind was at fault. A tug vehicle was requested to tow the plane to the gate, just in case.

Looks like very poor aircraft control to me.

Landing in strong and gusty winds is not all that uncommon but the press will do their part to blow such landings out of proportion to put the fear of the wind in to the PAX by using inaccurate descriptions like treacherous and scary, while say the plane was landing sideways.

Yikes...it got worse after it was already rolling on the runway!
