Wanted: 500 Terrible Travelers for LAX New Terminal Test

Los Angeles World Airports is looking for the worst of the worst to test out their newest terminal. The airport is now sorting through thousands of applications to find 500 people to act like the worst possible travelers – everything from “Gate Lice,” to “DYKWIA” elites.

Los Angeles World Airports – the agency responsible for operating Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) – is now sorting through thousands of applications to find 500 people to act like the worst travelers of all time. The Los Angeles Times reports the agency opened a public search for people to give their new terminal the ultimate stress test.

The First-Ever Search for the “Worst Passenger of the Week”

The airport’s newest terminal building, the Midfield Satellite Concourse, is near completion and will be ready to support passengers this summer. But before it’s opened to the public, airport authorities want to make sure it can handle everything thrown at it.

Cue the call for 500 of the “Worst Passengers of the Week.” Airport officials want every combination of traveler to descend on the terminal to give it a full “Operation Readiness and Transition” trial. This will include everyone from polite passengers in wheelchairs, to the “DYKWIA” elite traveler, to exhausted families with children having melt-down tantrums.

“We are going to write scenarios to check the processes that happen on a given day,” Robert L. Gilbert, strategic advisor for L.A. World Airports, told The Los Angeles Times. “With 150 to 300 people going through the … concourse, some will be in wheelchairs, some will be young people racing for the gate, some will be elderly.”

The trial survey received so much attention, the search group closed the application early as they sort to find the 500 passengers selected for the operational trial. That didn’t stop FlyerTalkers from submitting their applications to join the fracas.

“I signed up last night – hoping I get picked!” writes FlyerTalker OskiBear. “I did do a tour of Tom Bradley International Terminal a few years back when it was opening – forgot how I signed up for that, but it was loads of fun.”

“This popped up in my Facebook feed last night. Read the first line and signed up immediately,” writes forum member dbuckho. “But finished the questions and then told my two sons I found the job they were born for!”

Trials to handle even more travelers at LAX

The trial comes at a time where Los Angeles International Airport is serving record numbers of passengers every year. In Feb. 2020, L.A. World Airports announced over 88 million passengers came through their terminals in 2019 – 62.4 million domestic passengers and 25.7 million international passengers.

Although the survey is currently closed, the airport authority may re-open the search if they are unable to find 500 acceptable volunteers.

Sorry, I don’t travel from, to, or through LAX under any circumstances. I HATE LAX, and I am not alone.
