United Passenger’s Yoga and Meditation Practice Turns Violent

A United Airlines flight bound for Japan was forced to return to Hawaii after a passenger became violent when the cabin crew wouldn’t let him do yoga at the rear of the plane.

A 72-year-old United Airlines passenger allegedly flew into a rage when the cabin crew interrupted his yoga and meditation practice on a Saturday flight from Honolulu International Airport (HNL) to Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT). According to court documents, Hyongtae Pae shouted at crew members, attacked two passengers who attempted to lead him back to his seat and shoved his wife who he believed was siding with flight attendants. Due to Pae’s alleged actions, the pilot made the decision to return to HNL where the passenger was arrested.

The Evening Standard reports that the charging documents allege that Pae threatened to kill fellow passengers and shouted that there was no God, before biting and head-butting two marines onboard who tried to assist the flight attendants.

Pae was briefly held in federal detention, but released on bail on Wednesday. The judge prohibited him from returning home to South Korea, however, because the trip would require him to board a commercial airline flight.

Pae’s attorney told the court that the retired South Korean farmer and his wife had traveled to Hawaii to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary and that the long journey had left his client sleep-deprived. The defense lawyer added that Pae had recently started doing yoga “to help with anxiety.”

I has always been mu prejudice that Yoga makes people loud, belligerent, combative, and self righteous. But on the plus side they feel relaxed about it....

I'm usually the advocate for people taking responsibility for their actions, but the behavior, as described in this article, would suggest a faulty mental state -- not rational actions of some one who is merely acting like "a jerk." But who doesn't enjoy taking out their righteous rage on the internet?
