United Flight Issues Mayday, Lands Safely in Sydney

On Thursday morning at around 6:36 a.m. local time, a United Airlines flight landed safely at Sydney Airport (SYD) after crying “mayday” due to an unsafe level of fuel reserves aboard the flight.

According to United Airlines, the issue was the result of an aircraft malfunction, and that no injuries have been reported. The aircraft reportedly would have had about 45 minutes of flight left in it at the time of landing.

What a stuff up by united. No wonder only poor australians fly them as airline of last resort. Around Fiji pilot should have realised they were low on fuel & landed to get fuel.

In the alarmist fashion I'm finding in too many Flyertalk articles, the "mayday call" as reported by the BBC, morphed into a mayday "cry." What? Where did this author observe that kind of behavior and situation? It appears that it is just an attempt to sensationalize, second hand, an event which though unusual, followed standard procedures to ensure passenger safety. At least the headline writer didn't succumb and turn the event into a tragedy.
