United Announces Exclusive Partnership with Hertz, Perks for MileagePlus Members

Next month, Hertz will become United Airline’s only rental car partner. The partnership will create expanded benefits and earning opportunities for MileagePlus members.

United Airlines announced Tuesday that Hertz will become the exclusive rental car brand associated with the MileagePlus loyalty program starting on November 1. The Hertz brand includes Dollar and Thrifty discount rentals. In addition to naming Hertz as the carrier’s sole affiliated rental car brand, United outlined plans to increase the perks available to its frequent flyers under the new agreement.

Beginning January 1, 2015, flyers with elite status at United will be eligible to receive comparable status with Hertz. MileagePlus Global Services, Premier 1K and Premier Platinum members, as well as primary MileagePlus Club and Presidential Plus credit card members, will be eligible for free President’s Circle status in the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program. United MileagePlus Premier Gold and Premier Silver members will be eligible for Hertz Five Star status.

Under the new deal, MileagePlus Global Services, Premier 1K and Premier Platinum members will be able to earn up to 1,250 miles per rental when booking a car with Hertz. MileagePlus Premier Gold and Premier Silver members will be able to earn up to 1,000 miles per rental, Primary card members of MileagePlus credit cards will be able to earn up to 750 miles per rental, and MileagePlus general members will be able to earn up to 500 miles per rental.

MileagePlus members renting from Dollar and Thrifty will continue to earn 50 miles per day for rentals lasting between one and four days under the new agreement. Rentals with Dollar and Thrifty lasting five days or more will continue to earn MileagePlus members 500 miles.

United insists that the new pact will benefit both elite flyers as well as less frequent flyers enrolled in the MileagePlus program. “Our unique partnership will offer added benefits for MileagePlus members in general and will enable our top flyers to have an elite experience throughout their trip,” Praveen Sharma, vice president of loyalty, said in a statement announcing the new partnership.

That's great news. I don't fly United much anymore and I'm not sure I will be requalifying to Hertz PC this year, but I still have their Club card, so that should mean I can keep my status.
