Two Airport Workers Charged For TransAsia Crash
Officials have filed charges for negligence against two air traffic controllers at Magong City Airport (MZG) in relation to the crash of TransAsia Flight GE222 that resulted in the deaths of 49 people in 2014. The aircraft crashed into a residential area while attempting to land in the Penghu islands, and although authorities also blamed the two pilots aboard the flight, both died in the crash. Col. Ching Yuan-yu and Li Chia-feng were overseeing air traffic when the accident occurred, and if convicted of negligence, they could be imprisoned for up to five years. Yuan-yu and Chia-feng had taken part in a 12-minute discussion over whether to clear the landing due to extreme weather resulting from a typhoon at the time of the crash. TransAsia has promised “complete cooperation” with the authorities investigating the incident.
