TikTok User Accuses Alaska Airlines of “Slut Shaming” Over Outfit

Seattle, USA - April 28, 2012: Alaska Airlines jet at the D Concourse being loaded with passengers and luggage.

An Alaska Airlines flyer is accusing the carrier of embarrassing her in front of her flight over her clothing choice. In a series of posts on TikTok, the passenger shared a picture of her crying, with a caption accusing flight attendants of “slut shaming” in front of the aircraft.

Another flyer is taking grievances against an airline to social media over alleged violations of dress code violations. In a series of posts on social media network TikTok, flyer Sierra Steadman accused the carrier of embarrassing her for what she was wearing on the flight.

Flyer Wore Short Top & Shorts on Flight, Claims Flight Attendants Embarrassed Her

The first accusatory post went up on TikTok on July 31, 2021. The brief post had a caption that accused flight attendants of “slut shaming…in front of the whole plane and threatens to kick [me] off for what you’re wearing.” In the caption, she said she “never felt more degraded, ashamed, embarrassed, angry or sad.”

According to Insider, she shared another video on Monday, August 2, explaining that a flight attendant asked her to zip up her hoodie as she boarded. Afterwards, she claims that the employee grabbed her arm and began “yelling at me in front of everybody.” The TikTok video has since been made private.

Although Alaska does not have a formal dress code as part of their contract of carriage, the rules for those flying on a guest pass note that the airline’s rules require casual attire and “a neat and well-groomed appearance.” The airline has not issued a statement on Steadman’s claims.

Dress Code Rules Continue to Vex “Influencers”

Social media influencers continue to share their grievances with airline dress rules on social media, claiming there is a “double standard.” An influencer took to Instagram to complain against American Airlines over being refused boarding, while the airline says she was not properly dressed for her flight.

edgewood: No, I just completely disagree with your take - and since you don't agree with me - you are wrong. #2021DebateSkills :) I just fully the support the airline attendants in this case and most similar ones - not the ones where the crew is the one not following policy/law/basic civil behavior. As a longtime flyer myself (not as long as you), I've just greatly soured on the experience of so many today that can't shower/pack/plan/behave properly and expect everyone else to accommodate them at all turns.

That is something you wear to the gym, going for a run or in your own home. I don't expect people to dress like Jackie Kennedy, but is it that hard to wear pants and shirt that covers your midriff and isn't cut down to your navel?

MRM I hope your not implying I am whining about this ? My post was one of being in the air for the last 50 years first in the Air Force and then flying for business. Ask any Captain the least amount of disruption the better and we hate odds. Having access to Tik Tok or the likes at altitude can prove to be dangerous especially these days when almost everyone is pissed off and on edge. Its not her dress its the fact that social media like TIK TOk is live. Look at the demographics of these type of platforms. Sorry but it was a huge mistake. When your sitting in a aluminum can for so many hours it requires a certain amount of decorum. And yes I too am sick of things I am seeing today but you know our fathers / grandfathers said the same thing.

If you didn’t want the FA to address you “in front of everybody”, you should have listened when the FA “asked her to zip up her hoodie as she boarded” When a police officer gives you a warning not to do something, and you continue to do it, don’t complain when you are arrested. She was given exactly what she requested and ignored it.
