Tibetan Soccer Team Denied U.S. Visas

A women’s soccer team hailing from Tibet was denied visas to travel to the United States for a Dallas tournament. Coach and Executive Director Cassie Childers claims that 16 members of the team who sought U.S. visas for the competition were informed at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi that they “have no good reason to visit the U.S.”

According to Childers, embassy officials declined to provide reasoning for the visa denial, or even look at the documents provided during the application process.

“There is no opportunity for them to defect, and the thought of shaming themselves, their team and their country in that way sickens them,” Childers said. “This is not an anonymous soccer team that no one would notice if they never came back.”
