This Is What REALLY Happens to Your Checked Bags

An airport created a behind-the-scenes video that shows what happens to luggage after its checked in.

Travelers wondering what happens to their luggage can now satiate their curiosity thanks to this interactive video from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS). The three-minute video documents the journey of a checked bag at AMS, from when ground crews first handle it to the moment its transferred to a cart and about to be loaded onto an aircraft.

During the video, the bag is shown being transferred along a complex series of conveyor belts and carts. At the end of the video, the bag is loaded onto another cart by elevator and robotic arm, fully prepared for loading unto the departing aircraft. The ending shows the marriage of the robotic loaders with the Mechanical Unloading Module, both of which have been fully operational since 2009 according to The Telegraph.

In addition to the behind-the-scenes look, viewers who watch the video here on AMS’ official website can zoom, click and drag throughout the video to take advantage of a 360-degree perspective of the process. While other carriers have created videos showing the luggage handling process, AMS’ video is unique in that viewers can see every angle and sight-line of the process.

In 2014, over 55 million passengers and their luggage were affected by AMS’ luggage handling process, with a single-day record of 193,000 passengers passing through the major international airport. The video depicts one in a series of recent technological improvements at AMS. In June 2015, the airport began using a fleet of 35 electric buses for transporting flyers from aircraft to gate. One month later, AMS announced full beacon coverage, allowing the airport to improve customer experience.

That is very cool. It reminder me of a rollercoaster ride, I am surprised I don't hear the bag screaming as it goes up and down! I am amazed at how long the journey is too. Also did you notice how the bag stops when it gets to an intersection and other bags are coming? It would be nice if that happened at every airport when the bags are coming out onto the conveyor belt.

NBO is similar but there are people waiting to open the bags and take your sunscreen/camera somewhere in the middle :-)
