The Trick to Dirt-Cheap Business Class Flights to South America

The Trick to Dirt-Cheap Business Class Flights to South America
FlyerTalk

Hang out in the Premium Fare Deals section of the FlyerTalk forums and you’ll occasionally notice cheap business class flights that you’ve seen before–maybe several times.

Today, someone posted a cheap business class fare that offers a great way to see South America on the cheap via Avianca:

Orbitz Search Cheap Business Class Flights to South America

It’s a well-known (at least among those of us who are always on the lookout for cheap ways to fly far in comfort) routing… situation with Avianca that allows you to fly from New York City’s John F. Kennedy airport (JFK) to Quito, Ecuador’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) via Bogota, Colombia, and Lima, Peru.

And, because its a route that offers unlimited stopovers you can use this route to get from New York to Lima or really any nearby spot in South America that you’d like to visit. You can also go all the way to Quito for a few dollars more (and earn more miles).

The Trick

It’s pretty simple: Avianca doesn’t offer this cheap route on its site. To access it, you’ll have to book through a third-party online travel agent like Orbitz. But, if you’re planning to go all the way to Quito, OP recommends that you find the flight via ITA Matrix and book it with BookWithMatrix.

Whichever destination you choose, you won’t be the first FlyerTalker to take this route. Check out this trip report from someone who’s done it before. If you need a few more ideas about what to do when you get to South America, check out our South America section for a beautiful, less-crowded alternative to Machu Picchu, advice on what to do with just 5 days in Chile, or the best way to get to the Galapagos.

If you need help on how to do this, check out this forum thread for Help With the ITA Matrix.

If you have questions about this particular flight deal, you can head to this forum post about it.

You can also fly it as JFK-BOG-LIM-UIO and back with UIO as the “correct destination” for a few dollars more in taxes and earn more miles– for this suggest ITAMatrix into BookWithMatrix.

Most of these deals involve travelling overnight in a narrow body – so yeah, it’s technically “business”, but I’d take an economy day flight over that. Even better, pay the premium and get a bed.
