The Serial Stowaway Strikes Again

Numerous warnings and jail time failed to keep one woman from trying to fly ticketless.

Marilyn Jean Hartman, who’s been arrested numerous times for loitering in airports and trying to fly without a ticket — successfully managing to do so once — was taken into custody on Tuesday at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), according to USA Today.

On August 20, authorities let Hartman off with a warning after catching her trying to sneak past a PHX security checkpoint without a ticket. They weren’t as lenient on Tuesday, when an airport employee spotted Hartman lingering in the same area. Officers arrested her on suspicion of criminal trespassing.

Hartman, a 62-year-old retired secretary from San Francisco, successfully flew ticketless on a Southwest Airlines flight from San Jose International Airport (SJC) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on August 4. Afterward, a judge imposed a 24-month probation and barred her from entering LAX without a ticket.

The day after her sentencing, officials spotted her at LAX and arrested her for violating her probation. Consequently, on August 13, Hartman was ordered to spend 177 days at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, California. She was released from jail three days later as part of a program meant to ease prison overcrowding by crediting nonviolent offenders for good behavior, time served and other circumstances.

Four days later, Hartman was caught wandering PHX. It is unclear how she managed to travel from Lynwood to Phoenix.

Hartman’s history of roaming airports and attempting to illegally board planes stretches back to 2010, when she tried to hop a flight from Hawaii to San Francisco. In February of this year, she unsuccessfully attempted to fly from San Francisco to Hawaii three times. A judge eventually barred her from entering San Francisco International Airport (SFO) without a ticket and sentenced her to 18 months’ probation. Officers arrested her at SFO in March after she was discovered loitering in the airport. They caught her doing so again one month later.

Investigators have requested a mental health evaluation. More information about the serial stowaway can be found here.

someone needs to put their arm around her and teach her how to churn Chase Southwest cards. Much easier than being a stowaway.

Are all people who try to steal stuff mentally challenged? She has suffered little consequences for her behavior. 3 days at Lynnwood is nothing
