The Key to Finding Value With Dynamic Award Pricing

Although United Airlines has moved to dynamic award pricing, there’s still a way to find value with MileagePlus miles. After some simple sleuth-work, FlyerTalkers found the “secret” web page where United publishes some of their best deals on select routes.

When United Airlines moved to a dynamic award chart instead of fixed pricing for awards, many flyers expressed their disappointment in MileagePlus. Gone were the days of knowing how many miles you needed for a flight, instead giving way to the industry trend.

But when programs change, FlyerTalkers find ways to still extract value. In a thread on the FlyerTalk forums, members shared the new website every United MileagePlus flyer should bookmark.

United MileagePlus Flight Award Deals

“This will be a link that many on FlyerTalk will bookmark:” the Flight award deals page.

The page showcases many of the discounted flights available using MileagePlus miles. Most of the flights depart from United hubs and are priced similar to the old Saver award category. Among the deals available as of press time includes a flight from Newark to Orlando for 5,000 MileagePlus miles, Newark to West Palm Beach for 7,000 miles, and Newark to Los Angeles for 12,500 miles.

The page also allows flyers to search for flight pricing straight from the page. However, some noted that not every flight will come back with a price.

What You’ll Find

Although many agree that United MileagePlus isn’t what it used to be, the new search page is a step in the right direction. With aspirational awards gone because of the lack of an award chart, the page at least gives flyers an idea of what is available when.

“The response time suggests that there must be a batch pre-filter for the ‘deals’ they are showing, but still a very interesting piece of work,” notes one FlyerTalker.

“You can still search the dates to get an idea on how much the awards will generally cost,” observed another. “And then the price could be discounted if they have a sale or go up to hundreds of thousands of miles due to demand.”
