Targeted: American Airlines Free Elite Status Challenge

Targeted: American Airlines Free Elite Status Challenge

From the Forum:

Got an e-mail offer from AA today, presumably after flying a paid J/F fare to Europe without status (and credited to other airlines). I’m a DL DM with no other airline statuses

Offer was:

Free Gold status through 9/7/18
Opportunity to qualify for status through January 2020 by flying as follows:

  • 7K EQM/1K EQD (Gold)
  • 12.5K EQM/2K EQD (Plat)
  • 20K EQM/3K EQD (Plat Pro)
  • 35K EQM/4K EQD (Exec Plat)

Not sure if I will be taking this one up, but wanted to pass along the datapoint in case others get the offer. Would imagine flying CX in Premium Economy to SIN or MLE would still be the best run to pick up most of the EQM needed here if I wanted to go for Executive Platinum?

To see who else was targeted for this offer or to share your own, head to this FlyerTalk thread.

Note that it isn’t an either or deal, unless they’re really offering you a great deal. To qualify for Platinum Pro, for instance, I had to have 75K in EQM (actual miles, no miles from credit cards unless you had one of those cards with a specialty offering of spend X$ and get 10K$ applied to status) AND $9K in spending.

I have read that only BA, Iberia, , Quantas, and JAL count towards a status challenge on AA, but confirm that first. That said… From what a DL frequent flyer friend of mine has told me, even as a DM on DL, he got upgraded only 50% of the time, whereas I would clock my upgrades as EXP on AA at 70-75%, maybe more, which is a stark difference. I also find that CX will always upgrade OW emeralds (if there’s space) to the next cabin complimentary, which is amazing. I understand JAL does the same (BA/IB/LATAM) most certainly do not do this, but it’s a gift, so no complaints. Also, the CX lounges are worth a LONG layover at HKG.
