Taiwan Soon to Have a 3rd Major Airline Entering the Competitive Asian Skies

For years Taiwan has had limited airline competition and only two airlines, thanks in part to family drama and strict regulation laws. Recently Taiwan has announced that a third airline will soon be sailing the skies as the underdog of a major airline family has said he will be introducing his own airline, StarLux Airlines.

Chang Kuo-wei, the youngest son of Chang Yung-fa, a major mover in shipping containers and airline travel, was kicked out of the family business after the death of his father. Once a pilot and the chairman of the EVA Air, he was well liked by many in the airline industry but was manipulated out of his high standing by his older brothers.

Now Kuo-wei is ready to redefine his legacy with the introduction of StarLux Airlines, which he hopes will have similar success in Asia to Emirates in the Middle East. Kuo-wei has managed to overcome an existing clause in Taiwan’s airline regulation in order to more quickly introduce the airline to international skies. The Taiwanese public is largely in favor of the additional airline, hoping that it will create further competitiveness for the Taiwanese airline industry.

Within its first six years, Kuo-wei plans to have 24 aircraft with a staff of 3,500

and continue to expand to a fleet of 50 aircraft and 7,000 to 8,000 staff within a decade. If the goals are met, it will quickly make the new airline amongst the world’s major players.

Detractors have questioned where Kuo-wei plans to get the capital for his grand plan, but the airline genius and his mother reportedly inherited millions from his father upon his death, which he plans to combine with select investors for a startup funding of around $1 billion.

Like Dubai’s central location in the Middle East, Taiwan is centrally located in Asia, making it a prime spot for international connections in the region.

Well, OK, it’s always had more than two airlines. What it didn’t have was three long-haul carriers. EVA and China Airlines were the only airlines flying outside Asia.
