Employment laws are strong in Europe. Is that what prevents the background checks/references from previous employer?

>>Don’t they do background checks on people? Background checks are generally criminal checks, so unless you committed a crime, they're meaningless. Remember how we applauded regulations which said that it is now illegal to give a bad reference on a former employee? Now it is time to pay the piper. Companies are petrified to give any references that are less than stellar. So, bad employees fly under the radar. It is the law of unintended consequences. What we thought would help in one area, has hurt drastically in other areas. Was it worth it?! Thank the trial lawyers and the legislators.

@FlyingNone: Sadly, no. In my experience, airlines DON'T check prior work history prior to hiring someone, especially someone who has already been employed by another airline. Without getting into privacy issues, I can attest that I've seen a bad pilot from one airline go work immediately at another airline... which ultimately cost himself and his passengers their lives. The guy's job performance reviews and check flights were beyond bad. He was fired for his poor aviation skills at the first airline, no less.
