Spirit Airlines Adds Two New Routes to Colombia

Barranquilla, Colombia Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines is known for its a-la-carte business model. When buying airfare, your ticket includes a seat and a personal item, and that’s it. Additional amenities, such as a carry-on bag, checked bag, food, and drink, must be purchased separately. Without them, you’re getting from A to B with very few frills.

Regardless of how you feel about the carrier, it has paved the way for many travelers to get to awesome destinations without breaking the bank. From domestic routes within the United States to vacation spots in the Caribbean and South America, Spirit has created an impressive network – and they’re still expanding.

Beginning in April 2020, Spirit will add two additional routes to Colombia from Fort Lauderdale, making them the only U.S. airline serving seven cities in the South American country.

The Routes

Currently, Spirit serves five cities in Colombia (Armenia, Bogota, Cali, Cartagena, and Medellin) from its Fort Lauderdale and Orlando bases. The two new destinations served out of Fort Lauderdale will be Barranquilla and Bucaramanga, both of which are located in the northern part of the country. Here’s the schedule:

  • Flights to Barranquilla will operate on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays beginning April 23rd.
  • Flights to Bucaramanga will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays beginning April 22nd.

Spirit Airlines CEO Ted Christie said in a statement, “Colombia is considered home to many in Florida, and it is also a destination that has gained so much interest in the past years from the leisure traveler. We are very proud of our service growth to Colombia.”

As of now, Spirit does not have any direct competition on either of these routes; however, American and Avianca both operate to Barranquilla out of nearby Miami.
