Southwest Eyes Cuba Flights

Coming on the tails of the United States government’s lifting of the ban on commercial flights to Cuba, Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said in a message to employees on Monday that the Dallas-based company will compete for newly opened routes to the nation’s 10 airports.

“If we don’t get our foot in the door now, we might miss the opportunity to serve Cuba for a long time,” Kelly said in the company-wide message. “We are very prepared to consider this opportunity and may very well be flying to Cuba in 2016.” The hottest property right now for American airline companies is José Martí International Airport (HAV) in Havana, which is limited to 20 daily slots.
