Smuggled Exotic Sea Life Listed as Invasive Species Were Euthanized

Smuggled Exotic Sea Life Listed as Invasive Species Were Euthanized

A Kansas man was allegedly attempting to relocate a horde of exotic sea life to the heartland when United States Fish and Wildlife Service inspectors at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport smelled something fishy. The would-be fish smuggler is now facing charges after he attempted to retrieve the cargo of live freshwater creatures at the airport.

A Kansas man is in hot water after allegedly attempting to smuggle a live shipment of prohibited stingrays and other exotic fish through Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). It was a worse day for the contraband sea life, however, which had to be destroyed by United States Fish and Wildlife Service inspectors and Texas authorities who discovered the creatures on Tuesday.

“Charges filed and cases pending on a Kansas person having freshwater stingrays and boulengerella (both of which are on Texas’ invasive species list) shipped to DFW Airport,” the Texas Game Warden confirmed in a brief statement on Twitter. “He was going to transport them back to Kansas via vehicle (also illegal to possess in Oklahoma).”

According to Dallas NBC affiliate KXAS, officials discovered the illegally transported fish in water-filled plastic bags which were wrapped in newspaper and housed in a shipping crate. The fish were reportedly all alive when inspectors uncovered the plot. Unfortunately, because the creatures native to South America are considered invasive species, the Texas Game Warden reports there was no choice but to euthanize the animals.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service inspectors alerted Texas Game Warden officials to the unusual find. The unnamed suspect was arrested when he arrived at the airport to retrieve the shipment of live fish.

Curious if they even contacted the Dallas Aquarium or just killed everything right away. How sad.
