Smoke Rises From UA Flight Before Takeoff

At approximately 6:30 a.m. local time Friday morning, smoke was seen coming from a United Airlines flight departing from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) shortly before takeoff when the aircraft’s brakes locked up, according to reports. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the flight’s pilot reported a potential engine problem as the source of the smoke. The flight returned to the terminal, and United Airlines claims that it is currently investigating the incident.

I don't understand the way this is written. Is the author's insinuation that United is not investigating? Do they generally not investigate problems like this? The word "claims" in the last sentence makes me believe that the author thinks that there is something more!
