Singapore Airlines Commits to 39 Boeing Aircraft

Deal for new 777-9 and 787-10 Dreamliners valued at $13.8 billion.

Singapore Airlines will add 39 more Boeing aircraft to their fleet as they look to shift their fleet in the coming years. In a press release, the Chicago-based manufacturer announced that the flag carrier has committed to an order with an estimated value of $13.8 billion.

The order from Singapore will include 20 777-9 aircraft and 19 787-10 Dreamliners. The Dreamliners are an addition to the 30 the airline previously ordered, for which the carrier is the launch customer. The new 777-9 aircraft will offer all-composite wings, while the composite-built Dreamliners will offer additional passenger and cargo capacity.

“Singapore Airlines has been a valued Boeing customer for more than 50 years and we are honored they have selected the 777X and additional 787-10s to expand its future widebody fleet,” Kevin McAllister, president and chief executive of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said in a statement. “We appreciate the trust, commitment and endorsement of Singapore Airlines, and look forward to delivering market-leading capability to one of the world’s most widely respected industry leaders.”

The move to add more Boeing aircraft to the fleet comes as Singapore moves away from larger aircraft. Once the launch customer for the Airbus A380, the airline announced in 2016 they would not extend their lease on the superjumbo jet, which expires in October 2017.

When finalized, Boeing will have secured 63 net orders in 2017, comprised mostly of widebody aircraft. Singapore airlines has not announced if the new aircraft will be equipped with the famous Singapore Suite in the premium cabin.
