Should You Sleep Naked at a Hotel?

Can sleeping in the buff in hotel beds ever pose a health risk? The Huffington Post gets the skinny and finds out the naked truth.

Is it ever inadvisable to sleep in the nude at a hotel? This question was posed to Quora members on September 7 and debated for nearly two months. On Wednesday, The Huffington Post followed up, asking experts about the safety of sleeping naked.

Amy Brightfield, the health and features director for Better Homes and Gardens, told HuffPost Lifestyle that in terms of germs or bedbugs, sleeping au naturel in hotel beds does not pose a cleanliness risk. “The key to killing any germs is to wash sheets in hot water regularly,” Brightfield stated. “And hotels do this after every guest… so you should be OK.”

That said, not all hotels adhere to the same cleaning standards. Before traveling, it’s always wise to take a look at online reviews and read what other travelers have said about the hotel in question. Additionally, the Huffington Post recommends performing a cleanliness scan upon arrival.

Brightfield added that if you do happen to end up in a room with bedbugs, “wearing PJs doesn’t make it anymore or less likely that you’ll pick up bedbugs.” Sleeping naked will, at most, give the critters a bit more skin to bite. Nonetheless, the hot water washing Brightfield described above should prevent bedbugs from making a home in the sheets in the first place.

A HuffPost Travel poll attached to the article showed that, as of the morning of December 24, 80% of readers sleep naked in hotel rooms.
