Should You Be Excited That Lyft Is Launching a Subscription Plan?

There’s a new subscription service looking for your loyalty. Rideshare service Lyft is betting on the fact that riders would rather pay one flat fee every month instead of being charged per ride. The company is rolling out a new monthly subscription plan called the All-Access Plan.

Customers who sign up will pay $299 for 30 rides every month. However, the plan isn’t completely neat and tidy. Some riders could end up on the hook for much more.

The $299 monthly subscription cost for Lyft’s All-Access Plan only covers rides with values of $15 each. Riders will be stuck paying the difference for rides that cost more. One perk is that riders who go over their 30 allotted rides per month will get 5 percent off the cost of each additional ride that is purchased.

Is the All-Access Plan worth it for Lyft riders?

It’s really going to depend on how each rider uses Lyft. The plan basically breaks down in a way that provides riders with about $450 in rides for $299.

How can you tell if the plan will work in your favor?

You will likely come out ahead if you tend to spend about $15 for each Lyft ride you take. In fact, you can expect to save as much as $150 every month in travel costs if that’s the case for you. Even riders who typically take rides that cost about $10 each will still break even. The predictability of the plan coupled with the ability to get 5 percent off the cost of off-plan rides may be worth it for many people.

Lyft’s new monthly subscription plan can be used for all types of rides. That includes shared rides. However, the plan currently does not cover bike-sharing systems or scooters. Lyft has indicated that the company hopes to incorporate both of those options into its All-Access Plan at some point in the future. The All-Access Plan is currently only available to customers in the United States

This new offering from Lyft is making it pretty clear that subscription-based travel is probably the future of the ride-sharing market. Lyft makes no secret of the fact that it is on a mission to help commuters and travelers do away with car ownership. The ride-sharing company’s new subscription plan comes in addition to its Ditch Your Car promotion. That program allows customers to ditch their cars for 30 days in exchange for $550 in transportation credits.

Seems like a great plan for someone who gets a DUI and loses their license. But absent that I still enjoy driving too much to give up my car, altho it might be different if I lived in a city with terrible parking fees.
