Save Up to 45% on United Award Flights to Tahiti

To fall in line with Delta Air Lines’ Flash Sales and American Airlines’ Economy Web Specials, United Airlines is running more and more award sales with Papeete, Tahiti, being the most recent discounted destination for MileagePlus members.

A standard redemption rate from the Mainland U.S. region to Oceania comes to 35,000 miles each way, or 70,000 miles for a round-trip award. The discount amount varies depending on your elite status.

As a Premier elite member, you can save 45% off an award ticket, which drops your round-trip redemption rate to 38,500 miles. General MileagePlus members receive a discount of 35%, which reduces the final redemption cost to 45,600 miles for a return journey. Taxes come to about $55.

There doesn’t seem to be an additional discount for co-branded United cardholders, but expanded availability still applies.

The savings are good for travel between Jan. 14 and March 8. You can fly from any U.S. city, as long as you find available award space. In this case, you’ll connect in San Francisco to an onward ticket to Tahiti. Keep in mind that the discount is valid for United-operated flights only and other Star Alliance partners aren’t eligible for the cost reduction.

The flights book into economy, which entitles you to a free seat selection and a free checked bag.

To find availability and take advantage of the discounted redemption rate, you must be logged in to your MileagePlus account while searching for options. Otherwise, the system won’t know whether you’re an elite member or not.

To put things in perspective, paid flights on similar dates are going for $675, and it appears that both award rates and cash rates are low at the moment. So, United miles hoarders, if you’ve got ’em, burn ’em. Otherwise, pay cash and save the miles for when flights are expensive.
