Redeem 25% Fewer Avios on Select Iberia Flights

Spain’s airline Iberia is running a promo and offering mileage discounts on select flights booked with Avios. Iberia Plus members can use 25 percent fewer miles when booking awards in economy and business class for travel Oct. 1 through Dec. 15.

What U.S. Cities are Included in the Promo?

U.S. cities included in the promo are New York City, Boston, Chicago and Miami. You will redeem 12,750 Avios for a one-way flight from NYC, BOS or ORD to Madrid in economy and 25,500 Avios each way in business class. You will redeem 15,950 Avios for a one-way flight from MIA to Madrid in economy and 31,900 miles each way in business class. To take advantage of the deal, you must redeem miles by March 18.

Iberia Plus frequent-flyer program is a distance-based program, which means the number of miles you need for an award directly correlates to the physical distance between the two cities. Flight between cities that are further apart require more miles.

Additionally, Iberia implements peak and off-peak pricing to its award bookings. Most of the dates within the promo period fall into off-peak dates, except several dates in December.

Can I Use Miles from Another OneWorld Program for this Promo?

Unfortunately, the promo is open to Iberia Plus members only, and you will not receive a discount on redemptions through the American Airlines AAdvantage or the British Airways Executive Club programs, for example. Even though British Airways members earn Avios as well, they’re attached to BA’s program.

However, there’s a workaround for those who collect Avios with British Airways. As long as both of your accounts have been open for at least three months and have had some activity in them, you can transfer Avios between Iberia Plus and BA Executive Club for free. If your accounts are eligible, you can transfer your BA Avios to Iberia and book these discounted flights.

How Else Can I Obtain Iberia Plus Avios?

To earn Iberia Plus Avios, you can fly on Iberia and other oneworld partners. However, the easiest way is to transfer your flexible points into the program. For example, American Express Membership Rewards points, Chase Ultimate Rewards points and Starwood Preferred Guest points all transfer to Iberia at a 1-1 ratio. Starwood bonus of 5,000 miles for every 20,000 Starpoints transferred applies as well.

Amex points and Starpoints can take a day or two to transfer, and Chase points transfer to Iberia instantly.

Is This a Good Deal?

Yes! If you’ve never been to Spain or you have and looking for a good reason to return, this is it, so go book these flights right now. Distance-based award charts can work in your favor, and this is a great opportunity to take advantage of such a chart.

Do you suddenly have an urge to go to Spain?

@sheppy26: The screenshots were taken directly from Iberia when I searched. It is possible that your dates are excluded from the promo and you're seeing peak travel rates. Try to play with your dates a bit.

I don't think the amounts of Avios needed that you have quoted are correct. For example I have just searched for a return from MAD to JFK out 22/11 back 26/11 and the website is quoting me 84000 avios per person for a Business return.
