Pilot Caught Texting During Takeoff
An off-duty pilot was filmed texting from his seat on an American Airlines flight this week, ignoring the flight crew’s instructions to turn off all electronic devices. The airline claims the pilot – who was also captured checking Twitter – is not one of the employees.
Although the pilot wasn’t on duty at the time, the passenger who recorded the incident claims he’s worried what the pilot may be doing in the cockpit, as he was blatantly ignoring protocol.

I'm shocked (shocked, I say!) that any passenger would use a cellular device! I'm also shocked (shocked, I say!) that a web site would use such a grossly misleading headline as a way to entice clicks.
this is totally frightening. Frightening. Assume this guy is no longer working for AA and will not be working for any other airline. Get rid of him.
This headline crossed the line from "misleading" into "whoever came up with this headline is a douche". What kind of person are you that you contort the headline to the point of what is practically a lie. The difference between "Pilot caught texting during takeoff" and "Off-Duty Pilot caught texting during takeoff" is so significant that it really seems to make what actually happened a worthless piece of information. Anything for the clicks, I guess.
Pilots, like the rest of us, know exactly how dangerous a mobile phone is during take off and landing.
Not sure what the story is here. Certainly in Europe, making calls, texting etc is fine providing the plane isn't taking off or landing. On BA flights, as soon as the plane has landed, calls can be made (while taxiing to the terminal). A lot of flights have cells on board the aircraft specifically so that calls can be made while above 10,000m. I think it's only the US that still prohibits this. So is the story about the dangers of texting or the fact the pilot was ignoring protocol ( should rules that are wrong still be adhered to e.g. I understand some US airlines turn on the 'fasten seatbelt' sign to consign passengers to their seats even when there is no turbulence).
