Passenger Demands Crew Open Plane Door for a Smoke Break

Passenger angrily insists on being let outside to smoke a cigarette as plane refuels after weather causes flight to divert.

Being stuck in the cramped cabin of a weather-delayed plane is no fun, but for the Orient Thai Airlines passenger who really, really needed a cigarette, the situation became downright enraging. The unidentified Chinese national demanded that flight attendants open the aircraft door of the delayed flight so he could have a smoke. Unfortunately for the tobacco aficionado, the plane was refueling at the time and the crew was unwilling to accommodate the rather insistent passenger.

The flight from Bangkok International Airport (BKK) to Phuket International Airport (HKT) was diverted to Surat Thani Airport (URT) on Friday because of weather issues. By the time the plane was preparing to continue the trip to HKT, the annoyed smoker had had enough. Cellphone video taken by other passengers shows the irate flyer throwing a brief tantrum at the exit door before turning his back on crew members and attempting to make a phone call.

“After they denied, he began to rail against the flight attendants,” an eyewitness recounted in social media posts obtained by South China Morning Post. “Fortunately some warm-hearted passengers stepped in and stopped the disaster.”

In the end, the nicotine-dependent passenger got his wish and was escorted off the plane. The flight soon after continued on to its final destination without the disruptive passenger onboard.
